Linguascapes - Language learning in social media worlds

Research project, funded by the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation, 2011-1013

Researchers: Sylvi Vigmo, and Annika Lantz-Andersson, Department of Education, Communication and Learning, and Rhonwen Bowen, Department of Languages and Literatures

This project, which is an international collaboration, aims to study the potential which social media have in the learning and usage of English as a lingua mundi. In social media images, sound, text and video integrate and interact without the traditional separation into discrete language skills. Through participation, interaction and cooperation in social media, young people use and develop other language knowledge and competences which are relevant to language learning but which are not normally considered and valued in schools today.
