Latin - Research

Research in Latin at the University of Gothenburg has traditionally emphasised historical (‘Realphilologie’) and linguistic studies. Latin of the Classical period and of Late Antiquity has been the main field of study. However, the scope has expanded in recent years, in terms of both content and time period covered. Today the research encompasses historical, literary and epigraphic studies, and the field has been broadened to also cover Medieval Latin and Neo-Latin. Editorial philology and reception history are represented.

Research currently in progress concerns the history of mentality, primarily focusing on late Republican literature; literary criticism and reception history, focusing on the early French Renaissance; epigraphic studies, focusing on the linguistic flora in early Italy and on the medieval period in Rome and Sweden; early Christian and Neo-Lain texts; as well as prosody and metrics.

The subject area is actively involved in the Department’s research profile Transculturality, Translation and Transmission, in the early modern seminar in cooperation with for example history of ideas and science and comparative literature, and in the Faculty-wide Medieval Studies Committee. Latin also collaborates closely with the other ancient languages at the Department, including Ancient Greek and Old Church Slavonic.
