Research project

My project deals with the prosody and meter of the Latin language from the Pre-classical and Classical period (240 BC – 180 CE). The ancient theory of meter is derived from the Greek language and verse. Inspired by Greek art and literature, the Romans sought to imitate the Greek verse and transfer it to their own language. Since the prosody differs between languages the abstract arrangement of verse, the meter, needs to be modified according to the phonology of the recipient language. Thus, my research investigates the interface between the Greek meter and the Latin language. The main goal is to stipulate the prosodic structure of Latin that determines the nature and characteristics of the Latin verse compared with the Greek archetype.
