About Mariam Dalhoumi

Project description

My research project concerns a selection of pre-modern and modern private Arabic letters of the so-called ʾiḫwāniyyāt (‘brotherly letters’) genre. By working from the premise of an existing diegesis, it seeks to construe an experiential craft of characterization and depiction through a stylistic and narratological approach. The letter corpus in question ranges across chronological and territorial frontiers and includes specimens from the Iberian Peninsula (Andalusia) and North Africa (Morocco and Tunisia) from the 12–13th centuries of the pre-modern period and the first half of the 20th century, which was marked by the Nahḍa (‘the Awakening; the Arab “renaissance”’).

The study focuses on the epistolary “I”- and “You”-characters and how their constructions of meaning and possible interpretation are brought about through the writers’ use of language. This functionalist stylistic approach also interestingly facilitates the way in which the narratological aspects of voice and perspective (focalization) can meditatively be brought into the interpretative calling of the analysis. This project, therefore, is one in which transgeneric and cross-cultural (and cross-chronological) endeavors will be entertained and used in investigating and shedding light on how stylistic moves and aspects of narrative have been rendered in pre-modern and modern literary contexts.

Born in Stockholm. I obtained my B.A. and M.A. in Arabic with Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Stockholm University.
