About Joakim Hermansson

After studies in business, art history, work as a curator, and 25 years as an educator, I regard myself as a pedagogue with studies as a hobby, certified to teach English, Swedish, Culture, Mathematics, History, Religion, Citizenship, Geography, et. al.

A Master's degree in Linguistics and one in English literature, followed by studies in film and manuscript, introduced me to the questions that my doctoral thesis is devoted to: What are the representations of what it is to be an adult human being, that films and literature project and what happens to them when contemporary novels are adapted for the screen?

With a foundation of models from sociology and developmental psychology as well as theory formation regarding narrative structures’ rhetorical functions and media adaption, my project involves analysis of adulthood markers in novels, screenplays, and films such as Atonement, The Road, Fifty Shades of Grey, The Da Vinci Code, Me Before You, Shutter Island, Room, Up in the Air, Gone Girl, and The Martian.

Since 2010, I have also worked at Dalarna University, with translations, training of newly arrived academics, but mostly taught at the programmes for Screenwriting and Film / Television Production. My friends, however, associate me most with kayaking, gardening, carpentry and construction, Glyndebourne, Carl Larsson and forest chanterelles.
