About Iginia Barretta

Research

My thesis project concerns the role of the reader in postmodern novels.
I analyse the interaction between the text and the reader by exploring structures and strategies of the text that get the reader involved and that show how the interaction between the text and the reader is activated. The work gives particular attention to readers as fictionalized figures in novels, and describes the reader’s position and function as well as how he or she influences the reception process.

The analysis focuses on for example Gerhard Köpf’s and Christoph Ransmayr’s works. I also study Italian postmodern novels, with a particular focus on Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco. The thesis relates principally to the theoretical background to German reception aesthetics: This theory was a turning point in the literary thought system as it focused on the reader’s active co-partnership in producing textual meaning.

Background

Born in 1987. Obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 2011 in Languages and Literatures with a specialisation in German and Swedish at the University of Naples 'l'Orientale', Italy. From 2009 to 2010, I spent two semesters at the Humboldt University of Berlin as an exchange student. In 2011, I moved to Gothenburg, where I completed my Master’s degree in German Contemporary Literature at the University of Gothenburg in 2014. Since then, I have studied for example Cultural Anthropology and Linguistics. From 2012 to 2015, I taught Italian in two adult education centres in Gothenburg.
