Strategic plan

Introduction

The Department of Languages and Literatures contains a broad spectrum of languages with different temporal horizons and from different parts of the world. A general characteristic throughout this spectrum is that the focus of research and education lies not only on languages in themselves but also on the literatures and cultures within which languages are an integrated part. The Department is strong in undergraduate studies, with several languages that constitute specializations within the teacher education program and which can be combined with the economics program, together with a broad offering of independent courses. Most of the subjects are also strong in research, and African languages are, for example, a pure research and postgraduate subject (with the exception of a foundation course in Somali). The Department has a strong international orientation. It is to contribute actively toward the implementation of the University's language policy, internally as well as outside the University. Knowledge about the research that is produced and the education that is offered at the Department must be communicated to the surrounding community. Students are an obvious target group, but it is also important for others to be familiar with University operations, such as the labor market, schools and other universities and university colleges.

The major goals of the department are:

  • to strengthen undergraduate education through coordinated support for students on foundational courses and special efforts to recruit students to the subject areas of the department
  • to strengthen doctoral program, among other things by constructing broader thematic seminars were doctoral students can meet each other across language boundaries
  • to profile the research and to bring it to the attention of the public
  • to further develop collaboration internally (with students, other departments, other faculties) as well as externally (with the surrounding community, for example schools, business, region, alumni) with other universities inside as well as outside the country; with cooperation partners within Erasmus and corresponding exchange programs outside of ; with other activities in the countries of the languages concerned.
