Related event to SLaTE 2017 (7th ISCA Workshop on Speech and Langauge Technology in Education, Stockholm)

Link: http://www.slate2017.org/

18th August 2017, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Venue: H525, The Faculty of Arts, University of Gothenburg (see map)

This half-day workshop will be suitable for those who want to advance their knowledge and teaching skill in L2 Japanese education with focus on speech. The first session is also suitable to those who are interested in second language speech education in general. In the latter half, we will focus on the concrete usage of OJAD (Online Japanese Accent Dictionary) through a tutorial and a lecture.

OJAD (=Online Japanese Accent Dictionary with prosodic reading tutor)

OJAD is not just an online accent dictionary but has a lot more to give. It can visualize the prosodic and hierarchical structure for learners to read any sentence in standard Japanese. Further, it provides a natural-sounding speech sample based on the visualized prosody using high-quality speech synthesis technology. OJAD can be used right from the beginner level all the way to the advanced level to improve speech and presentation. Especially for beginner level learners, OJAD is deeply connected to various textbooks of Japanese and its contents have been translated into 14 non-Japanese languages (including Swedish!). The project team of OJAD received two academic awards from PSJ (Phonetic Society of Japan) and IEICE (The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers).

Organized by:

  • Nobuaki MINEMATSU (University of Tokyo), and
  • Yasuko Nagano-Madsen (University of Gothenburg)

Supported by:

  • OJAD Project, University of Tokyo, and
  • The research profile group Language and Learning (språk och lärande), Department of Languages and Literatures, University of Gothenburg.
