In September 2010 I took up a two-year postdoc-position at CERGU. Within the project I will look at three cases of linguistic landscape and landscaping in order to analyze the dynamics of national border construction. The cases are Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, which all present different histories of national construction and of language politics and planning.
My aim is then to discuss how the border construction and language politics that are articulated in these cases of linguistic landscaping relate to more wide-ranging transformative processes like globalization, regionalization and Europeanization.
I work with a broad understanding of the concept of linguistic landscape, seeing it as the display of words and images in public spaces. I also deal both with the linguistic landscape as a result from social action, and with linguistic landscaping as a dynamic social practice.
For this project I am collaborating with other researchers in the international network Cultural Borders of Europe (http://cbe.templatus.com/cbesite/).
