Chinese - Research

Sinological research at the University of Gothenburg investigates various facets of early and contemporary China in a critical dialogue with the theories and methodologies of the Humanities.

Fredrik Fällman takes a special interest in the religious beliefs and expressions of Chinese intellectuals, but writes also on the history of Christian mission to China. He is preparing a study of ”adapted” religion in contemporary China, and its political and linguistic aspects. Fredrik Fällman is also studying the contemporary Chinese view of ethnic minorities.

Martin Svensson Ekström’s research deals primarily with early Chinese poetry, poetics and intellectual history but also with early Greek and Roman poetics, and the early history of European sinology. He is currently finishing a study on the ideological underpinnings of the nascent Swedish sinology of the early 18th century, when scholars such as Karl Gustav Schröder (born in Gothenburg in 1719) wrote learned dissertations about China and Chinese culture. Martin Svensson Ekström is the editor of the Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (BMFEA).

Fredrik Fällman and Martin Svensson Ekström run the Bernhard Karlgren Seminar Series, where internationally prominent sinologists are invited to present their works-in-progress. The seminar is named after the prominent Swedish sinologist Bernhard Karlgren, who was a professor at the University of Gothenburg and also its vice-chancellor 1931-36.
