Preliminary thesis title:

“La representación de la conciencia en tres novelas de Ramón Hernández sobre la locura”

[The representation of consciousness in three novels by Ramón Hernández on madness]

Project description

My thesis develops the research carried out in my licentiate thesis, which focused on a novel by Spanish writer Ramón Hernández titled Pido la muerte al rey [both ‘I demand that the king will die’ and ‘I demand that the king will kill me’] (1979). In the novel, the protagonist is presented as mentally ill and narrates, together with an omniscient narrator, the story and sufferings of his life.

The main purpose of my study was twofold. First, I sought to investigate whether there was a connection between madness and distribution of power in the discourse, given that one of the narrators is considered mentally unstable and socially ostracized. In other words, I examined whether the madman’s voice could be considered to have the same or different status in the narration compared with the second narrator.

Second, since many of the narrated events could be seen as coming from both the character’s inner and outer experiences, another aim was to examine the effects of this duality on the construction of the main character’s madness. Hence, I identified several linguistic ambiguity mechanisms, including the frequent use of polysemy and homonymy, which explained that the same action could be interpreted as occurring both in the character’s mind and in his physical reality, without any of these domains being more prominent.

Two additional novels by Hernández, La ira de la noche (1970) [The Wrath of Night] and Eterna memoria [Eternal Memory] (1975), render the main character's mental state as unstable, either because s/he is in a mental hospital or because other characters signal their doubts about his/her mental health.

The three novels have in common the main character’s alienation and presumed madness, as well as a characteristic structure of time and space, where for example a place shifts abruptly to another without any indication of this in the text, events follow no apparent order, and characters may be converted to others. Madness in these three novels is not (re)presented as self-evident, but as something diffuse and ambiguous, where the main character’s experiences – both the imaginary and material – are interwoven and textually equalized.

Thus, my study seeks to examine 1) whether or not the madman’s voice becomes silenced in the narration of these three novels; 2) what consequences this can have for the image of madness in the novels; and 3) how the main character’s madness is constructed through narration, i.e. which discursive strategies can create the madness as it is represented in the text.
