About Elliot Blomqvist

Project

Our society talks a lot about sustainability but is according to environmental scientists not doing enough to adapt to the planetary boundaries. Human morality seems ill-equipped to deal with the long-term and large-scale nature of environmental issues in a global economy. My project has as its starting-point the contention that what Martha Nussbaum calls the literary imagination can be adopted to expand our moral concerns. I analyse works in the climate fiction genre – currently by Margaret Atwood, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Jonathon Porritt – in connection to the scientific and political discourse on sustainability. This takes the form of a thematic investigation of different positions on what kind of change environmental issues demand from human society – from business as usual to radical change, reform to revolution, technological fix to technophobia, sustainable development to societal transition, (green) growth to degrowth.

As environmental issues transcend the knowledge of any one research discipline, my environmental humanities research is transdisciplinary; working within the growing ecocritical theoretical field, I combine perspectives from natural science, social science, the humanities, and art itself to create a broad analysis of the concept of sustainability.
